Interdisciplinary Graduate Education
Graduate Minor Programs and Advanced Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs
University of Osaka promotes interdisciplinary education that transcends the boundaries of traditional departments and graduate schools. As part of this initiative, we offer two types of educational programs—Graduate Minor Programs and Advanced Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs—designed primarily for graduate students. These programs allow students to explore subjects outside their primary major or to study related fields that enhance their specialized expertise.
Each program consists of a structured curriculum of courses aligned with specific educational goals. By meeting the requirements set by a program, students will be awarded a Certificate of Completion upon finishing their graduate studies (this includes those completing Master’s degrees, as well as those withdrawing from Doctoral programs after completing the required credits).
For the 2022 academic year, 19 Graduate Minor Programs and 40 Advanced Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs are available.
Furthermore, some Advanced Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs are also open to 5th and 6th-year undergraduate students in 6-year programs (Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmaceutical Sciences).
Honors Graduate Program in Humanities and Social Sciences
The Honors Graduate Program in Humanities and Social Sciences (HGP-HSS) at University of Osaka was established in April 2024. Operated through the collaboration of various departments within the humanities and social sciences, it is one of the university’s “Knowledge Gymnastics” programs. Alongside specialized studies in their primary graduate schools, students are provided with a curriculum that offers insights into diverse humanities and social science fields, as well as opportunities for practical learning in various real-world settings. The program also features cross-departmental exchange among honors students and courses that provide travel support for fieldwork and other activities.
In the 2024 academic year, the program accepted its first cohort within two tracks: the Global Japan Studies Unit and the Socially Engaged Research Unit. Starting in the 2025 academic year, four new units will be added: Arts-Based Research, Philosophy of Science and Technology, Language Sciences, and DE&I (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion) Design. The Honors Graduate Program in Humanities and Social Sciences is designed to complement the existing Honors Graduate Program in Science, Engineering, and Informatics. However, it differs in several aspects, such as being exclusively available to students in Doctoral programs (Doctoral Late Phase).

Please feel free to reach out for a consultation if you encounter any difficulties in your student life.
University of Osaka is sincerely committed to preventing harassment and resolving issues to maintain an optimal educational, research, and working environment.
In accordance with the amendments to the Labor Policy Comprehensive Promotion Act and other relevant laws effective June 1, 2020, measures to prevent harassment in the workplace have been strengthened.
Reflecting these changes, the University adheres to three core principles: “We will not overlook harassment,” “We will not tolerate it,” and “We will deal with it strictly.” We are dedicated to eradicating all forms of harassment on campus and aim to foster and maintain a healthy and comfortable campus environment.
At the Harassment Counseling Office, specialized counselors and University-wide consultants (faculty and staff) are available to listen and provide support from your perspective.
Consultation with the OSIPP Human Rights Committee
The university-wide consultant appointed from OSIPP is: Professor Masako Ikefuji

In addition to the activities listed below, our consultants are available to provide support and guidance. If you encounter any difficulties, please refer to the following website or reach out to the counseling office or a designated consultant.

On August 8, 2007, OSIPP became a pioneer within the university by establishing its own Guidelines on Academic Harassment. Following the establishment of university-wide guidelines on December 21, 2010, the OSIPP guidelines now apply specifically to matters not covered by the university-wide regulations.
Activities of the Human Rights Committee
The Human Rights Committee is tasked with preventing sexual harassment and other human rights violations among faculty, staff, students, and related parties. Its mission is to conduct awareness-raising activities, provide consultations for victim support, and handle investigations and redress. The Human Rights Committee responds as follows:
- Deliberates on cases received through consultations or formal complaints. Depending on the nature of the case, the committee investigates the facts, determines the response, recommends redress measures, or prepares reports as necessary.
- Any committee member with a conflict of interest in a case is excluded from deliberations. To ensure neutrality and promptness, an investigative panel may be established under the committee.
- Human Rights Committee members serve as a contact point for complaints and provide consultations for faculty, staff, students, and related parties. Strict confidentiality is maintained, and no information will be disclosed during or after their term of office. In the event of a consultation, the following actions will be taken according to the nature of the case:
- Provide individual consultation as a departmental consultant. Depending on the case, advise on filing a formal complaint to the Human Rights Committee. Provide referrals to external consultation agencies if necessary.
- Request action as the Human Rights Committee. Consult on redress measures and other matters in cooperation with the the University of Osaka Human Rights Committee and the Harassment Counseling Office.
- 大阪大学人権問題委員会及びハラスメント相談室と協力し、救済措置等に関して協議する。
